What type of organization is the Detroit Institute for Children?
We are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization.
When were you founded?
We have been providing services to special needs children and their families since 1920.
What is the mission of the organization?
The Detroit Institute for Children provides a passionate, integrated approach to services for Michigan’s special needs children and their families.
Where do you provide services?
Today, our services are provided primarily in schools, Head Start, and Early Intervention programs throughout Detroit and the surrounding communities, with some provided in other parts of Michigan.
What services do you provide?
We provide the following services to children and young adults:
• Physical Therapy
• Occupational Therapy
• Speech Language Therapy
• Social Workers
• Special Education Consultants
• Educational Workshops
Can I bring my child to one of your therapists?
We provide services through partner organizations such as schools, Head Start, and Early Intervention programs. Currently, we do not have our own outpatient facilities.
How can my child receive services through you?
You can ensure your child receives our services through his or her enrollment with one of our partner organizations.
What are the differences between what you provide and what a contract services firm provides?
We are not a contract services firm. As a non-profit organization, our mission is to provide services to special needs children, their families and all those who are part of the child’s life. To meet that mission, many of the services we provide are “in-kind” or offered at little or no cost. We do not provide services for the sole purpose of raising revenue.
Where do my donations go?
The generous donations we receive are used almost exclusively to directly impact the lives of the children and families we serve. Salaries and all other operational costs are not paid for through the use of donated funds.
What are examples of services or items that donations will be used for?
Each year we use donated funds to ensure that we are providing the best possible care and support to the children and families we serve. While what is needed may vary from year to year, recent examples include:
• Assistive technology such as iPads for use in therapy
• Assessments and protocols used in the diagnosis and treatment of special needs children
• Educational workshops for parents of and professionals who work with special needs children
• Continuing education for our staff in techniques and treatment of special needs children
Your generous support helps us ensure all our children and their families reach their individual goals
